Our Economic development team has received $28,608,513 in grants for the City plus another $9,770,750 for the Ottawa Port District to move the railroad switchyard east of town.
The Parks Department has made improvements at Lincoln Douglas Park Project Inclusive Playground, Thornton Park, East Side Park, Fox River Park (Disc Golf), Allen Park Seawall and Sidewalk, Kiwanis Park Fitness Court and began reconstruction of a new city pool for a total investment of $8,110,000
The Street Department has resurfaced 136 blocks of streets, 73 blocks of Alleys, 4 blocks of concrete streets, 188 sidewalk ramps and 4 parking lots with a total investment of $8,452,000

Mayor Dan Aussem Accomplishments – Mayor Dan Aussem has been serving Ottawa for 16 years. Aussem, 66, lives in the house where he grew up. He and his wife of 47 years, the former Sue Zaccagnini, have five children and eight grandchildren. He graduated from St. Columba Elementary School and Marquette High School and then entered the iron workers union training program.
Aussem was elected as a union business agent in 1994 and in 2008 went to work for the Illinois Valley Contractors Association. He also serves on several pension funds and health insurance funds. Aussem’s introduction to Ottawa government was an appointment to the plan commission by Eschbach.
He was elected as a commissioner in 2007 and served as finance commissioner in his first term. He was re-elected in 2011 and 2015, choosing to act as public property commissioner overseeing the operations of the city’s water and sewage facilities. Getting Things Done!

The LONG TERM CONTROL PLAN PROJECTS for sewer separation and Manhole lining are currently under construction with an investment of $10,405,000

Dan built and donated raised beds including a wheelchair accessible bed for the Central School Project Unify Garden.
Dan worked with Stephanie Stacy from Ottawa is Blooming to secure land for the Community Garden in 2013.
He also donated the banners for Ottawa is Blooming and pulled the float in the Riverfest parade and spearheaded funding for an enclosed trailer for the garden volunteers.
While Dan was Finance Commissioner, he established the Enterprise Zone Fund which segregated monies collected from the Enterprise Zone projects and earmarked it for other city projects that may need funding in the future. This Enterprise Zone Fund was first used to purchase and remodel the IVCC Ottawa Campus. The rent paid by the college goes back into the EZ Fund to replenish for other projects. Dan was also instrumental in negotiating rental fees with the college when enrollment dropped. The IVCC Ottawa Campus has had 7,500 students utilize the satellite college.
The EZ Fund also loaned money to the parks and rec board for playground equipment and to the wastewater fund to construct the new Rte 71 sanitary sewer. Parks and Rec Department is planning on improving Peck Park with a loan from the EZ Fund. Each department will make annual payments until the debt is satisfied, replenishing the fund for additional projects.
Dan Aussem is the Executive Director of the Illinois Valley Contractor’s Association. He began his career in 1975 as an Iron Worker in Local 386 LaSalle, IL and was elected Business Manager in 1994. He was President of the Illinois Valley Building Trades Council from 2000 – 2007 and was also President of the Iron Workers District Council of Chicago & Vicinity 2001-2005. He was elected to the City Council of Ottawa, Illinois in 2007 and currently serves as Commissioner of Public Property. In 2008 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the Illinois Valley Contractor’s Association and as such is a Management Trustee on several Pension Funds, Health Insurance Funds and Apprenticeship & Training Funds.
Dan and His wife Sue have been married forty-seven years and have Five children and Eight grandchildren!
Dan has been involved with the United Way Labor of Love since its inception and has served on the Labor of Love Board, Home Inspection, Roof projects and more recently coordinating the trash and recycling pick up at every home.
He has also been involved with WCMY and Ottawa Food Pantry’s Freezin for a Reezin and has spearheaded the “Month of Milk” campaign the last four years. This campaign seeks donations specifically to help give every family an additional gallon of milk each month
Dan is a founding member of Ottawa First (Fireworks Committee) and has served on the Youth Service Bureau Board, the Ottawa Plan Commission, the Ottawa Firefighters Pension Board and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce.
